About Faculty

Faculty of Biotechnology and Biology is one of the oldest faculties of N. P. Ogarev Mordovia State University. From 1991 to the present time it is headed by Victor V. Revin - doctor of biological sciences, full professor, honoured science worker of the Russian Federation.

The Faculty consists of four departments: biotechnology, bioengineering and biochemistry; genetics; botany, physiology and ecology of plants; zoology which, alongside with teaching, pursue independent research.

The Faculty’s level of technical infrastructure can be ranked with that of leading scientific centres in Russia or abroad. Laboratories of the Faculty are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities manufactured by leading international companies from Japan, USA, Germany, etc., that gives the opportunity to explore all the manifestations of a living substance more thoroughly.

Research at the Faculty is conducted not only in laboratories but also includes field trips to all corners of Mordovia, the Volga region and Russia. Every student from the very beginning of his/her studies may initiate his/her own research in the area of his/her choice. The teaching staff is always willing to help him/her make the first steps. The Faculty also incorporates a number of structural units – Biological station, Botanical garden, Biological Museum, Biotechnology centre.

The Faculty has put together a highly qualified teaching staff, where the share of scientists with academic degrees and titles comprises 100%, including 6 scholars with highest academic degree in Russia - doctor of sciences (post-doctoral standing). They are engaged in solid research work and collaborate with Boston University (USA), Medical Center of the University of California (USA), Research Centre of Szeged University (Hungary), University of Babes-Boyai (Romania), Baku State University (Azerbaijan), Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering under National Academy of Sciences (Belarus), Jagiellonian University (Poland), Institute of horticulture (Lithuania), as well as with many Russian universities and organisations.

Prospective students can choose from two bachelor degree programmes: "Biology" and "Biotechnology" and a 5-year degree programme "Bioengineering and bioinformatics". There is a master's degree in "Biology" with 5 specialised tracks of studies, and in «Biotechnology» with 3 specialised tracks.

There are more than 500 students pursuing studies at the Faculty, including citizens of so called far- abroad and near-abroad countries. The Faculty provides both options: tuition-free education as well as fee paid education.

Academical programs

Bachelor’s degree programme "BIOLOGY"

Degree conferred: Bachelor degree with specialisation in Biochemistry and Bioecology.

Forms of academic studies – intramural (length - 4 years), extramural (length - 5 years).

Entrance examinations – Unified state examination in biology, Russian language, mathematics (field-specific).

Master’s degree

Five master's degree programmes are offered: Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Botany, Ecology, Zoology of vertebrates.

Forms of academic studies – intramural (length - 2 years).

Entrance trials – examination covering corresponding Bachelor degree programme material.

Graduates, completed education in above programmes, possess fundamental knowledge and practical skills necessary for their work in biochemical, biomedical, genetic laboratories, in environmental and ecological organisations, industrial companies.

Bachelor’s degree programme "BIOTECHNOLOGY”

Degree conferred: Bachelor degree with specialisation in Biotechnology of medications (drugs), Food biotechnology, Fundamental biotechnology.

Forms of academic studies – intramural (length - 4 years), extramural (length - 5 years).

Entrance examinations – Unified state examinations in biology, Russian language, mathematics (field-specific).

Master’s degree

Three master's degree programmes are offered: Fundamental biotechnology, Biotechnology of biocomposite materials, Biopower (bioenergetics).

Forms of academic studies – intramural (length - 2 years).

Entrance trials – examination covering corresponding Bachelor degree programme material.

Modern biotechnology is the field that determines current scientific and technological development, it is the science that thrives throughout the world. Biotechnology students explore production technology of medicines, food products, environmentally friendly building materials, bio-preparations for protection of plants, biofuel etc.

Having wide knowledge, expertise and practical skills, graduates work as engineers, biotechnologists in food processing industry (meat-processing plants, butter factories and cheese plants, bakeries, etc.) and microbiological industry (production of antibiotics, citric acid, xanthan, etc.), as well as do research in the leading scientific centres of Russia, Europe and the US.

5-year degree programme «BIOENGINEERING AND BIOINFORMATICS»

Degree conferred: Specialist Diploma of Higher Education

Forms of academic studies: intramural (length – 5 years)

Entrance trials: Unified state examinations in biology, Russian language, mathematics (field-specific).

Bioengineering and bioinformatics – is an innovative, advanced direction of training specialists in the field of biology, a highly demanded field of science in the leading countries across the world. Bioengineers study the principles of manipulation with living cells, their genes to create organisms with useful properties, bio-robots, artificial cells, etc.

The training is based on learning the disciplines of bioengineering curriculum (protein and gene engineering, engineering enzymology, bioinformatics etc.) and complemented by biotechnology disciplines, including knowledge of the processing industry, which will enable graduates to find employment in companies and in academic institutions.

Knowledge and skills attained in the course of studies will enable graduates to work for the most advanced companies be it research&development, pharmaceutical (production of medications) or food processing facilities (meat-processing plants, butter factories and cheese plants, bakeries, breweries and alcohol producing companies, etc.) or microbiological industry (production of antibiotics, etc.), or biochemical, biomedical, analytical and genetic laboratories.

Faculty of Biotechnology and Biology welcomes all those driven by interest to biological sciences and wish to get a sought-after worldclass profession to immerse oneself in a student life on Faculty’s campus. Experienced instructors will help you acquire the knowledge that will serve you for long years and form the basis for your professional development.
